A bank teller has saved a couple $40,000 after she noticed they were being scammed.

Erin Bugg, a customer advisor at the National Australia Bank branch in Rosny, Hobart, was asked by the husband and wife to have their account unblocked so they could send money to an ‘online investment firm’.

The couple were attempting to have the first of two instalments – $40,000 – sent to the fake firm in Perth.

The scammers promised a 12 per cent return on their term deposit and a guaranteed payout if the firm was to go bust, both of which sent Ms Bugg into high alert.

‘If there was a scam red flags bingo card, ‘online investment opportunity’ would be top of the list,’ Ms Bugg revealed in a statement by the bank.

‘Immediately, alarm bells went off for me. It sounded like an investment scam and Offline Dinosaur Game I was concerned this couple could lose their life savings.’
